What Makes Wireless Video Different?

At first, the idea of wireless video may seem novel, but what makes it different from other wireless things, like wi-fi networks, that we take for granted every day?

Remarkable Flexibility

Think of the difference between a human and a marionette. The puppet is controlled by a complicated series of strings. Sure, the marionette can do anything a human can do – it can dance, walk, run, and move its limbs. But when things get too complex, the strings can be tangled and movement becomes impossible. It’s the same principle with wireless video. With traditional analog cameras, their footage is restricted by the cables that connect them to the central recording unit, and the security they provide is fixed. With wireless video, cameras can be placed anywhere within the receiving area of the digital recorder, and can be re-arranged on a whim. This is especially helpful for establishing temporary security, giving wireless video the ability to protect events like music festivals which could not be secured by traditional CCTV systems. Rearranging cameras gives you the ability to control your own security on a different level and react to changing security needs. This is perfect a wide variety of businesses - from high security applications like airports, which must be able to rapidly respond to and control threats; to small business like art galleries, where business layout and content changes so much that traditional cameras would not be adequate.

Remote Viewing Makes Security Responsive

Remember the first time you saw a streaming webcam? (If you haven’t, go here) It was so enthralling to watch the world live through a camera. Wireless video gives the same power to security systems. Network video recorders, which also go by the names NVR or network DVR, are digital recording devices that have the capability to create their own bandwidth, which makes it possible to not only record wireless video footage, but transmit it over the internet or another network (like a LAN or VPN). For security cameras, this is an invaluable function. Video surveillance has long been a cat-and-mouse game that involved trying to track a recorded suspect down or trace the origins of a crime from the footage left behind. Although security systems have been effective for many businesses, some operators felt left behind because they could not immediately respond to a threat. Not anymore. Now, businesses and organizations that use wireless video and an NVR have the ability to transmit footage over the internet and follow along real-time from anywhere in the world, just like a web cam. You could watch wireless video on your cell phone or PDA 5,000 miles away from your office. What’s even better is that most video surveillance management platforms can send out e-mail alerts when a disturbance is noted – sometimes even attaching footage. Imagine if you were able to act immediately to a security problem anywhere in the world. All you need to do that is wireless video.
