Wireless Surveillance in Law Enforcement
Wireless technology is becoming a big player in law enforcement. Police forces are incorporating new surveillance systems that operate on wireless networks, allowing officers to access video footage while on the move. Many of the systems even enable officers to monitor video streams on portable devices such as PDAs and notebook computers.
Here are some specific examples of police forces effectively utilizing wireless surveillance networks:
- In an effort to reduce crime in Dallas, Texas, the Police Department has implemented a wireless video surveillance network that covers 30 percent of the downtown area. The system provides 24-hour monitoring and uses wireless mesh technology allowing for the network’s broad reach. Video footage is continuously monitored in City Hall and at Dallas’ Police Headquarters, and officers can access video streams and even operate cameras from remote locations, while on the move, using portable devices. - The city of Los Angeles has deployed a municipal wireless network and video surveillance system to monitor the Jordan Downs public housing complex, an area extremely susceptible to crime and violence. The network features 10 wireless surveillance cameras communicating on a wireless mesh network. LAPD officers are able to access live video streams remotely and can use PDAs and laptop computers to control pan and zoom camera functions in order to get a better look at suspicious activity.
