About Video Surveillance
Use of video surveillance techniques like CCTV is quite prolific in the western world. Countries like the UK and Canada spend millions of dollars each year on the installation, monitoring and maintenance of security cameras in public areas like transit stations, city streets, roads and highways and public squares. In the UK, video surveillance has proven to be an effective tool to prevent crime, detract criminals, and, in the event of crime, identifying and prosecuting criminals.
Many developing countries, concerned about their growing economies and looking for ways to draw in international attention, are choosing to install video surveillance cameras. The camera's primary purpose is surely to deter crime, but also to improve the image of a growing country, lure tourists and foreign businesses and spur economic growth. Countries like Namibia and China have installed video surveillance equipment in public places, and private businesses have followed suit.
In the US, video surveillance is widespread throughout most retail stores, federal and local government buildings, and in intersections to catch drivers who run red lights and identify guilty parties in accidents. However, many neighorhoods in suburban areas are starting to take an interesting approach to video surveillance. Groups in California and New Jersey, after seeing a rash of violent crime and theft in their neighborhoods, have initiated groups to maintain 24-hour watch over security cameras in their own neighborhoods.
