History of Video Surveillance

Video surveillance, in its relatively short lifespan, has served largely as a tool for protection and security. CCTV was largely used by governments until the 1970s and 80s, when private testing became more widespread. By the mid 1970s, many high risk businesses, like convenience stores, automated teller machines (ATMs), and banks were equipped with video surveillance systems. The visual presence of these systems was intended to deter crime, and the constant footage taken by the cameras was a helpful identifier in case of robbery or other crimes.

As technology became more advanced and less expensive, more businesses began to install video surveillance systems. Large retailers like Target and Home Depot began to install dome camera systems to monitor their sales floors, and bullet camera systems to monitor entry and exit doors, as well as delivery doors. Today, there are a multitude of video surveillance systems on the market, for businesses as large as multi-level department stores or as small as a one room convenience store.

Modern technology also allows for the cooperation of security systems to greater reduce the threats of theft, fraud and other retail problems like shrinkage and time theft. Security cameras and other store electronics now often work in conjunction. For example, a security camera connected to a till might photograph and log every transaction, or a camera might record employees as they clock in and out of work. Cameras may monitor the shipping entrance and loading docks of a larger retailer to prevent theft while trucks are unloaded. The potential for security cameras is unlimited, and it grows each day.

Now, with the wide variety of video surveillance technology, more and more groups are using video surveillance technology in an increasing number of applications, helping develop the future of the security industry.
