Uses of Video Analytics
Video analytics is seen as a revolutionary tool for the video security industry. By condensing years of behavioral knowledge into security cameras, video analytics could prove to be more efficient and effective at preventing crime than any other type of camera on the market. Large-scale retail operations like department and “big box” stores already struggle with security – each year, there are reports of widespread theft that is simply not recognized by video surveillance cameras or security foot patrols. By implementing video analytics in a retail environment, behaviors of thieves could be easily recognized and targeted, acting as another set of eyes for the security team. However, security is not the only area where video analytics cameras show great potential. Industrial processes and factories, where inspections and quality control are key elements of production, could also greatly benefit from the use of analytics cameras in product regulation. Let’s say a factory uses two different methods of quality control: small samples are statistically analyzed to gauge the quality of a larger batch, and products are visually inspected to ensure quality. A video analytics system could be configured to perform the visual inspection. Algorithms in the analytics software could analyze surveillance camera footage for product flaws and irregularities, and could alert a worker’s attention when a product must be discarded or repaired before being sold. This would not only make the quality control process much more effective and efficient, it would also increase the quality of the product being marketed to the public. |
