Workplace Surveillance Methods

Surveillance in workplaces is instituted for many reasons. Whether it be to ensure employee productivity, protect trade secrets, or keep intruders out, many different types of surveillance equipment have become essential for many business operations. Businesses may employ one of these methods or a combination of several in order to maximize safety and efficiency:

  • Human – Security guards or supervisors may survey an office or work area to ensure that everything is working properly and/or safely. In some retail environments with high incidents of shoplifting, employees and their possessions are often inspected before and after their shifts to ensure that no internal shrinkage has occurred.
  • Security Cameras – Security cameras are widely used to protect businesses from intruders and to make sure that sensitive areas like safes or confidential files are safe. In environments with a high risk of threat, such as convenience stores and banks, security cameras serve as a way to protect employees and protect the profits of the business. Cameras are not only installed to look out for burglars, but to monitor for employee theft as well. Cameras are also beginning to appear in areas like retail break rooms to prevent internal shrinkage, as it has been shown to be a large source of loss for many companies.
  • Computer Programs – Monitoring acceptable use of computers and network resources has become one of the most widely used types of surveillance equipment as computers and computer use in the workplace has become more widespread. Computer usage is monitored either by programs which log all activity, including keystrokes, sites visited and other activity. The program’s database stores user data and records from the computer, and a supervisor may sort through the data for violations, or in some case, the program may alert managers if a violation occurs. Many corporations, in order to curb web browsing during the work day, have installed access control programs which prohibit users from accessing questionable sites.  If an employee tries to access forbidden content, or a site the filter deems inappropriate, access is forbidden and a page displaying a message citing the reason is shown instead.
  • Phone /Voicemail – Monitoring voicemail messages for questionable content has become a popular practice. Managers and supervisors periodically scan through an employee’s voicemail messages to search for any signs of betrayal or breach of company policy. Although these voicemail searches rarely warrant any results, they have been shown to be an instrumental form of surveillance equipment in finding incriminating evidence against already erring employees.
