Security System History

Different types of security systems have been around for as long as concerns over personal property have existed. Early security systems, while not as advanced as modern ones that utilize advanced technology, were nevertheless effective in securing person and property. For example, a common security measure for castles and fortresses was to place the building on the edge of a tall cliff. By making the building inaccessible on three times, it became easier to defend against intruders. Defense against attack was only necessary on one side of the building, making victory much more likely.

Some primitive security measures are still used today. Bungy sticks are stakes with sharpened end, sometimes coated in poison, that are driven into the ground in a deep hole. The hole is then concealed with groundcover or branches. When force is applied to bungy sticks, the cover to the hole buckles and the subject is impaled by the sticks. This tactic has been used for thousands of years and was a known tactic of the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war. Castles also used bungy sticks, putting them underwater in moats to prevent intruders from entering the castle from the water.

Most modern security systems rely on technology to secure their areas. Many homes, businesses, stores, and government offices use electronic security systems to protect from intruders. Security systems have become more prolific as technology has become more advanced and less expensive to implement. Although modern security is largely comprised of technological defenses, some systems may implement techology as well as physical defense to maximize security. For example, a house may have a high-tech security system, but the homeowner may still put a 2x4 in the track of their sliding glass door to prevent it from being opened.
