About Security Systems
"Security system" is a broad term referring to a method or methods used to protect a facility from outside threats or intrusions. Security systems can implement an infinite number of methods to prevent access, ranging from extremely simple to extremely complex. Because of their versatility, security systems are used to protect a wide variety of buildings, including: homes, apartment buildings, businesses, retail stores, government buildings, hospitals, prisons, museums and more. Security systems are so popular because they offer the advantage of (often affordable) security and peace of mind to such a wide range of people, businesses and organizations.
Despite differences between technology and methodology, most security systems utilize some form of access control to protect their users. Access control is designed to only allow access to specific parties and may be designated by the user of the security system or by an automated process (a computerized security system, for example). Access control may also be structured to allow access privileges to many people, but be tiered to allow more access to some, and restrict access of others. Security systems can use a variety of methods of access control, whether they be supervised by humans or technology. These methods, like types of security systems, may vary widely. Some examples of access control resources include: human (security guard monitoring CCTV, security guard checking papers, security guards watching doors or exits), ID cards (ID card scanners, ID card readers), biometrics (fingerprints, fingerprint readers, iris scanners, graphology, voice recognition, handwriting recognition, retina scanners, hand geometry readers), heat sensitive technology (infrared), CCTV, security cameras, and more. Security systems can use one method to control access or any combination of methods. Obviously, the more methods of access control used by a security system, the more secure a building or area will be. |
