- Officials in Des Moines, Iowa have installed security cameras to prevent local gangs from vandalizing public and private spaces with graffiti. Seen as an escalating problem in Iowa's state capital, graffiti has caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage over the last several years. - Retail giant Target has used video surveillance and barcode tracking to catch thieves who defraud the store for hundreds of thousands of dollars. One notable case was a Hillsboro, OR man who used an inexpensive barcode program to make inexpensive pricetags, which he used to purchase over $100,000 in expensive LEGO toy sets. - Intrepid users of Apple MacBooks have come up with programs that snaps a photo of any would-be thief. Both iAlertU and Undercover! are set to snap a photo of the thief using the laptop's built-in webcam when the pilfered computer is opened for the first time. iAlertU simply sends the snapped photo to the user VIA e-mail, while Undercover! has some advanced features that consistently sends the users screenshots and network data. - Officials in the US Department of Homeland security are asserting that an increase in border security has decreased the numbers of arrests made at the US-Mexico border. Michael Chertoff, the head of the Department of Homeland Security, cites the record number of National Guardsmen and other Border Patrol officers as the main catalyst for the fall in arrests.
