Future of Security Cameras

The use of and applications for security cameras grows every day. As technology evolves, there are constant new uses and types of security cameras that open up security for new fields, and help make existing security cameras more effective. Digital cameras, since being introduced into the market, have introduced a number of concepts which have made it much easier to identify, subdue, and prosecute offenders. Technologies like facial recognition have been released, and IP surveillance cameraswhich track suspicious movements (still under development), are a revolution in the field.

New developments in digital camera technology are enabling users of security cameras to do new and innovative things with their technology. These advances, upon their release, are purported to greatly reduce cost, mostly with personnel. An example of this is with cameras that offer recognition technologies, with the ability to track suspicious movment. This technology, although it is not released, already has several proposed uses:

  • The US government has proposed the construction of a "virtual fence" along its southern border in order to prevent entry into the country by illegal aliens. The fence will consist of towers equipped with IP cameras that are able to track suspicious movment. The use of this revolutionary technology will reduce the amount of personnel needed to patrol the border. Cameras would feed to a control room, and officers would be dispatched to a particular location when the camera senses an illicit crossing, and the surveillance is identified as valid.
  • In the UK, the use of "intelligent" IP video cameras is also proposed for use in place of existing CCTV cameras. After the July 2005 terrorist attacks in London, heightened security has caused officials to believe that this alternative is a more effective solution to keeping British streets safe. In this case, the use of high tech digital IP cameras would also help lower cost by reducing the amount of personnel needed to monitor the camera feeds. It would also help identify more criminals and lead to their convictions.
