Security Cameras in the News
- The city of Rochester, NY is placing 30 cameras in a high-crime neighborhood of the city called La Marketa. The cameras, officials hope, will prevent crime and violence, and help identify those who perpetrate crimes like drug dealing and robbery in the neighborhood.
- The Toronto Transportation Commission has announced a plan to outfit all 1750 of its busses and streetcars with high-definition security cameras in the next year. Originally, the TTC had planned to outfit its vehicles with security cameras, but a spike in assaults and other crimes on board TTC vehicles prompted officials to intensify security measures on TTC property. - The mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley, has announced plans to blanket the city with security cameras - on street corners and in public transportation. Part of the city's campaign to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, the mayor wants to install multitudes of cameras to prevent terrorism, theft, and other street crimes.
