IP Video Concerns

The advantages of IP video surveillance are hard to ignore, and many users are looking to migrate to new digital systems for their surveillance needs. But with change comes questions. Here are a few concerns that have been voiced regarding the transition to IP surveillance and digital IP video cameras:

Bandwidth

IP video cameras can be integrated into existing networks, but some customers are worried about the amount of network bandwidth required for digital video surveillance. Advances in compression technology, such as MPEG-4, allow for video streams of only 2 to 4 megabits per second, making concerns about bandwidth a non-issue for many users. For example, a typical bandwidth stream on a corporate LAN is something in the neighborhood of 100 megabits per second. A compressed digital video stream uses only a very small percentage of that. Additionally, bandwidth usage can be dropped by decreasing the frame rate of a video stream. Most IP video cameras have a function that allows for adjusting the frames per second. The sampling rate and compression percentage can also be adjusted to reduce file size.

Network Security

Footage from network IP video cameras can be viewed from any computer with network access. For that reason, security is extremely important. IP surveillance systems receive the same level of protection as the rest of the devices on the existing network in which they’ve been integrated, and access can be limited to authorized users with password-protected accounts.

Keeping Existing Equipment

For those who shudder at the thought of completely overhauling their security systems with entirely new equipment, there’s no reason to fear. With IP surveillance, the tools are in place for existing analog cameras to be integrated into the system, allowing for their footage to be streamed and stored digitally. Analog and IP video cameras can coexist in the same IP surveillance network.
