Intelligent IP Video Cameras
As technology improves, surveillance cameras are becoming increasingly intelligent. Many IP video cameras are now equipped with in-camera video analytics such as motion sensing, behavioral recognition, and facial recognition. Software algorithms within the cameras run processors that analyze video content for specified data. These “intelligent” cameras are gradually catching on as effective security solutions for a number of different applications:
- IP cameras with facial recognition capabilities are an asset to banks, which are beginning to find such technology extremely useful for combating check fraud and “phantom ATM withdrawals.” Cameras monitoring teller windows or ATMs can capture images of every customer transaction that takes place at the bank. When a suspicious transaction takes place, the individual’s likeness is stored, and the camera can be programmed spot the culprit’s face during subsequent visits to the bank. Security personnel are alerted when there’s a match and can then confront the suspect.
- Retailers can use cameras with built in analytics for a variety of applications. A properly positioned camera can be set up to count the number of customers who enter a store throughout the day. Behavioral recognition can spot instances of loitering and other suspicious activity, while motion sensing can prove effective in monitoring the store for abnormal activity after hours.
- At industrial sites, intelligent cameras monitor for abnormal after-hours activity and trespassing.
- In the transportation industry, intelligent cameras placed in locations such as airports and train stations can spot instances where suspicious bags and packages are left behind. Other potential uses include monitoring for unauthorized access to restrictive areas, and facial recognition for identifying marked suspects.
- Intelligent IP video cameras equipped with advanced analytics are used for Homeland Security to combat terrorist threats, and for border protection.
