Introduction to the IP Camera

The IP (Internet Protocol) Camera is the newest development in security cameras. Like traditional CCTV systems, an IP camera system consists of cameras and a central unit which records footage. However, IP cameras can be wired or connected wirelessly to their server, and their camera footage is digital as opposed to analog. Footage is recorded onto the server digitally (usually using MPEG-4 quality) and the higher resolution of the digital IP camera makes the quality of the recorded much greater than that of the traditional analog security camera. Digital files recorded onto a server are not only much higher quality than the traditional cassette; they are also much more efficient when it comes to storage and data retention. Traditional cassette tapes require complicated catalog systems and large amounts of reserved space for storage, and are reusable only to a certain extent. Digital files, however, retain their quality indefinitely and are stored electronically, which reduces space drastically.

Wireless IP Cameras are also helping many groups expand security to cover areas which were previously difficult to secure due to dangerous mechanical operations, toxic storage, and other hazards. Because wireless cameras are not limited by wiring or circuitry, they are able to be placed in situations where cameras were previously not safe or logistical. Wireless cameras are also easily adaptable and able to be flexible with the needs of their installers. For example, metal theft has escalated greatly in the last decade. Thieves often target warehouses for copper piping and wire to sell to scrap yards. As this was rarely a threat before, warehouses and suppliers were unable to secure their facilities from this immediately. Now, with wireless cameras, security officers are able to change the system as their needs dictate, moving cameras from one area to another if a greater threat is perceived.

IP Cameras also have the ability to broadcast their security feeds live over the internet, giving their maintainers remote access to the security video at any time from anywhere in the world. This feature is radically different from CCTV technology, where footage stays on cassette tape. IP security’s dynamic viewing capabilities breathe versatility and flexibility into traditional video surveillance systems.
