Home Surveillance Technology

Just as IP (Internet protocol) surveillance technology has altered the face of the video surveillance industry, it is also having a profound impact in the area of home security. Today’s homeowners can now install digital security cameras in and around their homes that can transmit video feeds over the Internet. Such IP-based home surveillance systems allow homeowners to monitor live video feeds and recorded footage remotely from any PC or laptop. Additionally, many systems allow users to even control the cameras remotely. Digital video footage can be stored directly onto a hard-drive or digital video recorder where it is archived and easily accessible if an incident, for instance a robbery or an act of vandalism, needs to be investigated.

Mobile surveillance is also on the rise in home security. Homeowners, especially those who travel a lot, like to be able to check in on their property while away. IP surveillance allows for remote monitoring via the internet, while new developments in mobile surveillance take things a step further, enabling users to view digital video feeds on cell phones and other handheld portable devices. It’s now possible to program home surveillance systems to deliver automated email and text message alerts when suspicious activity is perceived on the home-front. Upon receiving such an alert, the homeowner can then monitor the activity on their cell phone or PDA. If the situation warrants police action, authorities can be quickly notified, and the visual evidence can help to significantly speed up response time.

Some homeowners are also choosing to install smart cameras on their property. Smart cameras utilize built-in software algorithms for such functions as motion sensing and behavioral recognition in order to detect specific activity. The cameras can be programmed to begin recording and send out automated alerts when a potential threat is perceived.

With this new technology, home surveillance systems are becoming increasingly effective, and not all systems are expensive. There are plenty of home surveillance solutions available that are affordable while still allowing users to take advantage of some of these technological advancements.
