CCTV Security System

While the literal translation of CCTV, or closed-circuit television, refers to the use of analog video cameras to transmit signals to a select set of monitors, the term CCTV has in many ways become synonymous with video surveillance as a whole. This can lead to confusion, especially when you consider the fact that digital IP-based surveillance systems are now flooding the market. These new systems are, in fact, quite different from traditional analog CCTV installations, however it’s common for people to still refer to any security camera as a CCTV camera regardless of if it’s analog or digital. This is similar to how Kleenex has become a universal term for tissue paper, though the differences between a digital IP camera and an analog CCTV camera far outweigh those between a ply of Kleenex and some other brand of tissue. In order to squelch this confusion, it’s a good idea to refer to CCTV and IP surveillance as two distinct forms of video surveillance. They can work together, for sure, but an IP camera and an analog CCTV camera are not the same thing.

CCTV Security Systems in Relation to IP Surveillance

There are several key differences between traditional CCTV and IP-based video surveillance. CCTV utilizes analog cameras to transmit signals to a specific group of monitors. Footage from the cameras is archived and stored on bulky cassette tapes. While such systems are certainly effective, they pale in comparison to the potential of IP-based surveillance.

IP surveillance systems offer a number of key benefits over traditional forms of analog CCTV. These benefits include remote monitoring, limitless digital storage, scalability, easy integration, and lower installation and maintenance costs. As technology continues to improve, the benefits of IP surveillance only become clearer. Consider the advancements in camera technology. IP cameras are getting more intelligent by the day. For instance “smart cameras” are equipped with built-in video analytics. Essentially, they are cameras with brains, capable of facial recognition, advanced forms of motion sensing, behavioral recognition, and more. IP surveillance has taken the industry to an entirely new and exciting level.
