Examples of CCTV Video in Crime Investigation

Historically, one of the most significant uses of CCTV video has been in solving crimes and prosecuting criminals. Instances of successful crime investigation using CCTV video abound, and surveillance systems are becoming more and more prominent in a wide variety of locations from train stations and buses to parking lots and city centers. CCTV video surveillance is especially prominent in the UK. Here are a few high-profile examples where CCTV has played a critical role in crime investigation:

  • CCTV cameras in London provided police with important leads following the failed bombing attempts of three tube trains and a bus on July 21, 2005. Camera footage was used to identify all four bombers who were eventually tracked down and arrested.

  • David Copeland, otherwise known as the “London nailbomber,” was arrested in June of 2000 thanks to CCTV camera footage. Copeland was sentenced to six life sentences for murders carried out during a 13-day bombing spree throughout London.

  • CCTV mall security camera footage was used to identify two young boys involved in the murder of two-year-old Jamie Bulger in the Liverpool area in 1993. An image of the boys leading Bulger through a mall became a valuable piece of evidence in this disturbing case.
