The Future of CCTV Cameras

What will CCTV be like in 10 years? It's a question that no one can answer, and in a constantly evolving and extremely competitive field, it's something that everyone wants to know. Traditional CCTV cameras have been the security backbone for many businesses for decades - retail shops, grocery stores, banks and even governments have relied on these systems to keep their employees and customers safe. However, with the rapid development and increasing popularity of IP cameras, the security world has reached an impasse over which is preferred: analog or digital?

There are arguments for both sides - digital has higher quality footage. IP cameras are flexible and easy to install and maintain. Analog cameras are inexpensive and have been reliable for so long- why change? There are more choices for recording and transmitting analog footage than ever before, even an option to digitize footage and transmit it over the internet (just like an IP camera). But, there's always a catch. Analog systems are expensive to maintain and have lower picture quality than digital. They also are inflexible. Those coaxial cables connecting all those cameras to the recorders? Once they're installed, they're staying put, or they need drills, ladders and some guys in a truck to re-adjust. Don't forget digital- these systems are pricey - with systems costing upwards of tens of thousands of dollars, and what will happen when the technology becomes obsolete?

While security experts argue about camera minutiae like generations of others hair-splitters before them, some have decided that even with its downfalls, IP cameras are the wave of the future. Not even the initial sticker shock or the threat of obsolescence can take away from the promise these cameras offer. Technology like wireless internet, video analytics and other intelligent features, they claim, will leave CCTV cameras in the dust.
