Kids and cops synch up in integrated surveillance system
Students at Bishop Brossart High School in Alexandria, KY can look forward to an improved security system this fall - one that includes the 14-member Alexandria Police Department. Under a new test system, security cameras in Bishop Brossart's hallways and cafeterias will be accessible to police surveillance monitors. It's a test drive of a preventative program that is focused on student safety. Officers will be able to view surveillance footage from public areas at the school at any time, allowing them to respond quickly to any potential issues. Although the possibility of a serious problem is rare in this small town, this program, which will expand to neighboring elementary and middle schools if successful, could be a landmark model for other, larger schools, around the country in the future.

Switch to IP video puts Bentonville High School at the head of the class
Bentonville High School, in Bentonville, Arkansas, is making the move to IP-based video surveillance in an effort to elevate its level of security. The school, which currently utilizes an analog CCTV surveillance system, will soon install 190 digital security cameras to monitor key areas such as hallways, entrances and exits, and gymnasiums. University of Aberdeen upgrades surveillance system with Axis network cameras and video servers
The University of Aberdeen, which currently has about 14,000 students enrolled, recently upgraded its overall level of security with the addition of IP network cameras and video servers from Axis Communications. The new system combines the facility's existing 35 analog cameras with 20 Axis 233D+ PTZ network domes for a total of 55 security cameras spread throughout the campus. All of the cameras are now deployed across a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), which has been set up specifically to carry data traffic from the surveillance system.

More proof that school surveillance cameras help keep vandalism and crime down
In the Wayne-Westland Community school district in Detroit, vandalism is a relatively rare occurrence since the implementation of video surveillance seven years ago. Inside the building, vandalism is a rare occurence; outdoors, the rate is just slightly higher, but it has dropped 90%. And when a burgalar stole school district property, police caught him less than 24 hours later thanks to video images of him from the surveillance system.

New school surveillance systems in Chicago link cameras to 911 center
Chicago-area public schools are already equipped with surveillance cameras - and these surveillance systems help keep students, teachers and staff safe and buildings secure. Now, the city is using a $418,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security to further enhance the school's security by linking 4,500 school surveillance cameras to 911 control centers.
Cameras from the schools - including 200 high schools - will be configured to stream footage directly to police headquarters and emergency centers like 911 depots. Public safety officials and emergency response workers will be able to see live footage from multiple locations. In the event of an emergency, first responders like police officers will be able to stream footage from their vehicles as they approach the school.
Cameras in Chicago area public transit already use this system - cameras in "El" trains and buses already route footage directly to police stations and 911 response centers. Mayor Richard Daley hopes that the system will provide a more comprehensive form of school security than the one that exists. Currently, schools use a variety of different systems that will be integrated to support the streaming technology.

Chicago looks to link school surveillance cameras to police department and 911 center
After a string of deadly shootings and violent activity in and around Chicago area schools, the city is moving quickly to upgrade its surveillance program to include better video security for schools. Currently, Chicago's surveillance network includes 10,000 private and public security cameras. That number will grow by 45 percent once the school surveillance upgrade is completed. Federal funds from the Department of Homeland Security will finance the $418,000 project.
