Juvenile center upgrades security with surveillance cameras and electric-lock doors
Vigo County's Juvenile Justice Center, in Terre Haute Indiana, is putting the final touches on a major security upgrade to its facilities. The project includes the installation of 22 new surveillance cameras inside the building, seven exterior cameras, and three electronic locking doors.
The center's previous system included 17 security cameras, but no form of video security around the facility's exterior. Outdoor security was provided by occasional perimeter checks performed by the staff.
By significantly upgrading its video surveillance system, the juvenile center will be better equipped to continuously monitor for threats such as drug smuggling, and potential acts of violence. There are high hopes that the cameras will help to deter kids from assaulting each other and from threatening staff members. Another benefit of the system will be its ability to provide visual evidence in cases of in-house complaints and accusations. Images from the cameras will be monitored by detention specialists from a control room within the building.
