University of Aberdeen upgrades surveillance system with Axis network cameras and video servers
The University of Aberdeen, which currently has about 14,000 students enrolled, recently upgraded its overall level of security with the addition of IP network cameras and video servers from Axis Communications. The new system combines the facility's existing 35 analog cameras with 20 Axis 233D+ PTZ network domes for a total of 55 security cameras spread throughout the campus. All of the cameras are now deployed across a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), which has been set up specifically to carry data traffic from the surveillance system.
The analog CCTV cameras, which were originally operating across four standalone systems, are now centralized on the VLAN with the help of 10 AXIS 241Q video servers. The surveillance footage from both the analog cameras and the new Axis network cameras transfers across fiber optic cables to a storage device which can hold up to 14 days worth of video. Milestone network video recording software is used to view and manage the recorded material.
By combining its existing CCTV equipment with new IP network surveillance technology, the university is now equipped with a far more effective video security system, one that is also easy to expand in the future if more cameras are required.
