Property value could increase if surveillance installation is planned during construction
At least one expert in Chattanooga, Tenn. claims that the best time to wire a home for video surveillance is during the construction process. Certainly, with today's digital cameras and wireless technology, installation can happen at any time, but it's easy to understand why it makes sense to consider adding cameras at the onset if you're building a new home. John Lancaster of Smarthomes Chattanooga estimates that pre-wiring a house for video surveillance, as well as entertainment and lighting, can add 2 percent to the value of the property.
One example recommended by Lancaster features a front door security camera that automatically delivers video images to household television sets anytime someone rings the front doorbell. With surveillance technology becoming increasingly effective and affordable for homeowners, the demand for home security cameras is growing steadily. It will be interesting to see if we eventually reach a point where video surveillance is a standard feature in new homes.
