Guangdong - the next world leader in surveillance?

Guangdong province, located in southern China, has been called the "world's factory" for almost 30 years. Indeed, Guangdong and its 90 million citizens are responsible for producing a majority of the world's personal electronics and other goods, earning the title as the wealthiest area in all of China. Now Guangdong is looking to add another statistic to its list, and this one has to do with security cameras.

Over 90,000 security cameras have been installed in Guangdong this year - in shopping malls, buses, businesses, and hotels. Add this to the 200,000 cameras already rolling in the city of Shenzen, and the 380,000 additional cameras projected to be installed by year's end, and Guangdong Province might just become the most watched place in the world. Officials are planning to link these public surveillance networks in with cameras in government agencies and businesses around the province to create a massive security network. This massive security initiative will be supplemented by the use of RFID cards for citizens (more information about this program at the Alpha Card Blog)

The United Kingdom is currently regarded as the world's most "watched" place - with one camera for every 14 people. Should the plan in Guangdong province follow through, there will be one camera for ever 90 citizens.
