Mobile security cameras batten down the hatches at Tall Ships Festival

Large crowds are expected to flood the Halifax waterfront this weekend to relish in the majesty of the Tall Ships Festival, an annual event that involves the arrival of ships far more impressive than your average sloop. With the lofty vessels drifting into town and reeling in the masses, Halifax Regional Police will use the festival as an opportunity to give their new mobile command post a real-life test. The command post enables police to elevate a special surveillance camera more than six meters skyward for far-reaching views, while additional security cameras will also be scattered throughout the waterfront.

A similar setup was used to monitor crowds and traffic during a Rolling Stones concert last year. The police department will not keep the cameras a secret. There will be signs posted warning waterfront goers that they're under watch. The thinking is that public knowledge of the cameras' presence will work to deter criminal activity during the festival, while also easing any privacy concerns.

It's possible that a permanent surveillance system will be installed on the Halifax waterfront because of the high level of activity in the area, but for now, police will rely on mobile security cameras for notable events such as the Tall Ships Festival.
