Bangkok turns to Axis IP cameras in traffic congestion battle

Traffic congestion is a huge problem in Bangkok. 2.6 million cars take to the streets in and around the city on an average day, and it's estimated that 500 new cars add to that number with each passing day. The incredible amount of traffic in Bangkok has led to severe pollution, a high volume of accidents, and this remarkable figure: Bangkok drivers spend and average of 22 days per year sitting inside their cars.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has taken a number of steps towards attempting to solve this problem, including improved public transportation, and the installation of a new traffic monitoring system that relies solely on Axis network cameras. The surveillance system allows the central control staff to monitor traffic conditions at over 40 of the city's busiest intersections as well as major entry and exit lanes. The staff can then effectively update drivers on the roads with valuable traffic information by way of display signs. If drivers are properly informed of road conditions ahead, they can take action to avoid major congestion, helping to cut down on the number of accidents, while improving the general flow of traffic.

Bangkok's traffic monitoring system consists of 50 Axis 213 PTZ network cameras and 180 Axis 211 network cameras. Both camera types offer remote monitoring, while the 213 PTZ even enables remote users to control its pan, tilt and zoom functionality for more detailed looks at specific incidents. The monitoring staff is able to view the surveillance footage from their desktop PCs. When an incident is detected, a message is sent to the appropriate display signs to inform drivers on the road.
