Surveillance Catches Suburban Atlanta Robbery in Action

What do you think of when you hear about a bank robbery? A Richard Nixon mask? Burly armed men in all black and ski masks? Not in Acworth, Georgia. Two girls recently robbed a Bank of America Branch inside a grocery store with only large sunglasses hiding their faces.

The girls walked up to the counter at around noon on Tuesday, February 27, handed a note to the teller demanding money, and sat laughing and joking while they waited. Authorities don't know whether they were armed, and the contents of their note have not been revealed, nor has the exact amount of money (although described as "considerable" they stole. One thing about the case that has been quickly and widely released is the surveillance footage of the girls during the robbery, which shows them laughing and at ease - certainly an audacious move (see photo). Cobb County sheriffs quickly developed a list of suspects based on the surveillance footage, but the large sunglasses have not led to any solid leads.

Banks have relied on video surveillance for years in order to prevent robberies and effectively identify criminals, and criminals have spent years trying to evade the unblinking eye of the security camera. Costumes have been as wild as presidential masks, as audacious as a simple hood, or as improvised as pantyhose or ski masks.  However, these young girls, with literally no disguise except their trendy shades, have proven that video surveillance is only one element of a secure bank.
