Officials Say Cameras will Deter Crime

Video surveillance cameras have endless uses and have served many wide-ranging purposes since they appeared in the mid-20th century. Arguably the most popular use for security cameras is theft and crime prevention - if a store has video surveillance cameras installed, any attempt at robbery or crime could be documented on tape and used as evidence. Many security experts also argue that visible security cameras also may serve as a psychological deterrent, and that warnings or prominently displayed cameras prevent potential criminals from acting out.

Officials in Bixby, Oklahoma are hoping that their new system of digital surveillance cameras will do just that - prevent crime. A series of high-tech cameras mounted in parks and at public intersection is hoped to prevent crimes like petty theft, vandalism and larceny, and aid law enforcement during accidents. The cameras, which are mounted at the top of light poles, may not be completely visible, but prominently placed signs in recorded areas inform visitors and residents that they are indeed being recorded.

Along with preventing crime in parks, Bixby officials think that these surveillance cameras could provide essential evidence during crimes like police chases or Amber Alerts. At the moment, the cameras are only used for surveillance, but there is a possibility they might be used to enforce traffic laws later on.

Municipal security cameras are becoming more and more popular as advanced IP technology develops. Many cities have public cameras monitoring intersections, freeways and parks, and some cities are creating initiatives for businesses to install security cameras on their properties. Bixby's surveillance program, whether it is a success or failure, could show be an accurate barometer of attitudes towards public surveillance - will its benefits be embraced?
